Biometric Appointment Prep
After filing certain immigration applications, USCIS will schedule you for a biometrics appointment. We help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.
What Is a Biometrics Appointment?
A biometrics appointment is when USCIS collects your fingerprints, photograph, and signature. This information is used for background checks and to produce your immigration documents. It is a standard part of many immigration applications.
What to Know
What to Bring
- Your biometrics appointment notice (Form I-797C)
- A valid photo ID (passport, green card, driver's license, or state ID)
- Your green card or Employment Authorization Document, if you have one
What Happens
- You check in at the Application Support Center (ASC)
- Your fingerprints are digitally scanned
- Your photo is taken
- You provide your signature
- The entire process usually takes under 30 minutes
Important Tips
- Arrive on time — you may be turned away if you are late
- Do not wear nail polish or artificial nails (they may need to be removed for fingerprinting)
- If you cannot make your appointment, contact USCIS to reschedule
